Leaving Portland Oregon on the fifth day of September two thousand and ten, driving east on i 84 in an old Mercedes Benz, just cruising at 65 leaving a trail of bbq sent. I converted my car to run on recycled fryer oil so with 55 gallons of vegoil on a 20 dollar trailer the trip was set to head to the east coast!

Just outside of Portland I noticed the full fifty five gallon drum sliding around on the trailer. Wahoo, I pulled over and secured the load immediately. On with our journey, the first stop was bz corner to take John Prentus captive for our trip across America.

Getting it done with 400 miles the first night, then slept in a truck stop. Ugh, so many truck stops. Sleep for three maybe 4 hours if you’re lucky. There were a lot of truck stops and loss of sleep.

We made our first delivery on time and on veg oil. The delivery, a stack of oars and a guide stick, to supposedly the first guy to run Lake Creek in Colorado!! Balls to that guy... I’m currently paddling one of his sticks and it’s been great.

With 1400 miles traveled and not a dollar spent on petro we were tired and wanted more veg oil. It was a no go so slow to find more veg oil on the fly. So we decided to make the rest of the trip on diesel. JP made a good try at getting some of you slackers back home to help us find veg oil however nothing panned out.

J.P. was a mad man driving thru the nights. I was in a cold sweat in the passenger seat we proceeded to get closer and closer to Gauley. Sick as a dog for the first week of the trip I was. Ok fast forward three days and six hours of sleep later we are in Kansas and boom the tire on

the trailer goes out. We limp off the high way and on to a side road to take off the rim to find another tire. We had a bit of a meltdown in our group dynamics and me and jp were ready to punch each other. It wasn’t long before all that passed. With a new tire we were back on the road.

We made it to Gauley in three and a half days. A freaking stout three and a half days.

On July first my alarm went off at 630 am. It was to freakin early and I was set on going back to sleep. I alerted the zonedogg of my sleepy status. He fired me up by letting me know he had all the gas money for the trip covered. So Bryon, Bobby and I all loaded Bryon's rig to head down to the Mckenzie river. We hiked and scouted koosah and sahali falls.
It was very clear why Luke had said koohsa was the cleaner of the two. Sahali falls is a super gnarr 120 ftr with class five entrance, and exit.
Above the drop there are tree ridden ledges stacked four deep.
Then you half to deal with a curling wave hole before you are on the dome rock entrance of sahali. Im guessing after you huck this mean mother the goal would be to eddy out and portage the class five run out drop.
It just didnt look fun.

We put on close to the lake for a small warm up paddle too the falls. We portaged from above sahali down to khoosa on the river side trail. After discussing safety and photo opportunities, Bobby miller was the first to fire it off. We had discussed the entrance and its lines and he was exactly where we had talked bought being. This drop had a lot of left momentum. It seamed to me that as soon as Bobbby went for the old Oregon tuck it pitched him over the handle barrs and when he impacted he was ejected from his boat.
I tossed him a rope and he was all smiles when he got to shore. Then up the hill I went to huck my meat off koohsa. I was nervous as hell up top as I strapped on the hand paddles. I did a small seal lunch and lined up my line on the falls. It felt perfect right where I wanted to be.

My skirt imploded and I rolled up with a half full boat. The micro seconds of mass clarity felt at the lip off this drop was awesome. The days of having a sore back was not so awesome.

Howdy all, hucky here signing in. Giving you this weeks foamwork for your class of boating. Yee haw!!!!!!!!!!!!!

get a 12x12 block of mini cell and a 2x1x1/8 sheet

start by laying lots of reference lines for referring to as you cut

these lines are
front back and side to side

oh yes dont stop mark that block

there you go now start cutting here is how mine went.

Well thats that for now. I feel a lot more stable with my new foam block. Im not putting this up to say mine is the best. Just so you can see what I did :) happy paddles everyone

Willie I. on Lava

Weve been getting out to the farmlands a lot lately. So I have some footage for yall! Its kinda tricky to get footage because of the gored in 20 ft walls. The farmlands is a beautiful place that words and pictures can not do justice. As all of the white salmon, what a gem. I cant wait till the dam on the lower section is out. There are a few logjams to deal with and new wood is a constant issue. If you look up the canyon walls you can see many logs ready to fall in and change the runs nature. Well enjoy

Chelan Gorge Trip Report:
This run has high quality drops in a short section of river. Offering crystal clear, warm water, dam released, boating. When you are entering the gorge there are a lot of signs telling you there is no egress possible which heightens your sense of awareness. After a few class 3-4 drops to get you revved up you get to the first major rapid called entrance exam. With few boaters running the drop and even fewer styling the line. Here is Mike Long showing us how its done!

The next major rapid was double slide. On the right is a chunky drop with a big bolder at the bottom ready to bash your elbow through your skull! Here is Chuck T. eating his chicken at camp.

Next in the batting order is super boof. This is a nice 8 to 9 footer that’s normally run on the left with a right boof.

On the first day I ran Throne room with super clean line beta from the man him self, Jesse Combs

He told me to fade left driving right with a super delayed boof. Thanks for the great beta Jesse. I had a sweet line. After eddying out, I watched 10 people go right in the throne.

The throne room is an outcropping of severely undercut rocks on the left. Needles to say I felt too lucky and portaged on the second day.

After a very short recovery pool comes pinnacle falls, which is basically double drop rapid on the green truss section on steroids.

This drop washes right in to a boulder sieve. With no real way to set safety, all in our group portaged. Bellow pinnacle you do a hairy ferry above the builder sieve. I would like to thank everyone on this trip on both days for all the great teamwork. Personally I would like to send a big shot to Brad X. Thanks man!!!! Brad was above double slide and boulder sieve rapid standing in the river waiting to pull you to safety. After sneaking boulder sieve on the left you enter in to some fun 4-5 read and run drops. I suggest taking a look when the bridge is overhead. The boulder garden below offers some tight spots to get pinned in! This run was amazing! Thanks again American Whitewater and all the volunteers.

Trip Report: Lochsa Idaho

This run was fun! Sporting super big wave trains and lots of rafters! Who could ask for more. The falls were a circus with people lining the street to watch the white water carnage. Never have I seen more grills and camp chairs then at the Lochsa falls circus. After one of our runs me and two other folks decided to get some carnage on the falls. We aim to please the crowd! Luke Spencer and Montana Dan are in the back of the raft with me ridding the bull. Thanks to Kathleen McCaine for the footage.

So I guess I should do a trip report to start things off. Ill start with the bear creek Montana trip even though the run was 3 or 4 months ago. The trip started something like this: Drive for eight hours to get to some podunk bar in Idaho. Drink till half the group is wasted enough to follow the bartender home. Sleep for three hours, drive for three more hours, hike for what felt like five hours, felling like hell for the rest of the day.

OK time to get on a gnarly class 5 plus steep creek. Im just about to put on for the first rapid I look up to see Mike Long coming down the brush. I think he was a little concerned to see me on this run. No biggie though we all have to think for ourselves on the river.

So I peel out of the tiny eddy and start paddling down the first steep slide.

After the fast ride down I catch the eddy on the right at the bottom. I get out and in the back of my head I already know I may be biting off a little more than I can chew. After pushing those feelings aside and letting the drop- fever take over, I decided to run the next rapid. Before I make it to the first really significant drop I hit a "fu" rock and flip. Trying to set up for a roll i get my paddle blown out of one hand. I started to freak out, we all know what happens when you freak and don't keep your cool. I swim out and see Mike Long standing on a huge tree in the river that im headed under and he screams swim left left left! Thanks for the beta Mike. I swim hard left washing through a manky boulder garden, all the time knowing that bellow this drop is a logjam. After banging the shit out of my legs and dam near breaking them I am able to get out on the left. My friends named this rapid “walk through the woods” that is what I should have done. My boat is broken and pinned down stream the local boys give me hand getting to safety and get my boat out so I can hike out. Those same locals told me they had never seen anyone swim on that run. Needless to say that was the end of that day for me.....
